Average speed of an object in a time interval is equal to the total distance travelled divided by the total time taken.
Different units of speed: The SI unit of speed is meter per second. Another commonly used is kilometer per hour. When we talk about speed of aeroplanes and cars, it would be more appropriate to use km/h than m/s.
Let us take an example to understand this concept :
Illustration 1: In traveling form Pune to Nagpur, Rahul drove his bike for 2 hours at the speed 6 kmph and 3 hours at 70 kmph. Find his average speed
Solution : We know that,
Distance = Speed x Time
So, in 2 hours, distance covered = 2 x 60 = 120 km
In the next 3 hours, distance covered = 3 x 70 = 210 km
Total distance covered = 120 + 210 = 330 km
Total time = 2 + 3 = 5 hrs
Average speed :
Illustration 2: A person can walk at an average speed of 1.5 m/s. How far will he walk in 4 min.
Solution:
In question we are given average speed as 1.5 m/s and time as 4 min . We need to find out the distance covered by the person.
Therefore the formula for distance covered is
Total Distance = 1.5 x (4)(60)
= 1.5 x 240 = 360 m
A car is moving at an average speed of 332/5 km/hr.How much distance will it cover in 25/4hr | |||
